In 2023, I was very lucky to have been offered an opportunity to attend a day at the most famous recording studios in the world - Abbey Road Studios in London, to shadow/assist a Mastering engineer. To say I was excited/overwhelmed would be a huge understatement.
This opportunity was linked to a discussion I was having with a careers advisor (Michelle Humphries) at university, as I was eager to work in the music industry, and she made the unthinkable a possibility for which I am forever grateful.
To have been physically inside such a wonderful building, was the most incredibly profound experience of my music career and one that was very special, for at that point in time, the Beatles had just released a new song... 'Now and then', which was recorded and created at Abbey Road Studios and happened to be in the top 10 of the UK charts.
I worked through the eight-hour shift listening to songs and admiring the beautiful equipment while discussing with the engineer Oli Morgan, how the processes and technology were being applied. Towards the end of the day, I asked Oli, "What is the most prolific experience that you have had since working at Abbey Road Studios?," To which he replied, "Well, I have just Mastered the Dolby Atmos mix of the new Beatles song, would you like to hear it?" ...
That was the most incredible thing that I have experienced to this day. Hearing that song, in the room it was mastered, played by the guy that mastered it, in the place it was recorded by the most famous band in the world, while the song was topping the charts....
There are no words, I still to this day cannot believe it.
